Zimbabwe Rolls Out Six-Pillar Plan to Safeguard Food Supplies Ahead of El Niño Season: Media
Cabinet's approval paved the way for implementation of a comprehensive response plan to support farmers and ensure adequate grain stocks in the anticipated below-normal rainfall 2026-2027 season, according to the Ministry of Agriculture's Permanent Secretary Obert Jiri, cited by media.
The strategy includes:
1⃣Enhanced strategic grain reserve to ensure availability for vulnerable groups;
2⃣Adequate grain supplies for consumers and industry, with imports facilitated where needed;
3⃣Accelerated climate-smart agriculture, with farmers encouraged to conserve moisture and link production to market demand;
4⃣Livestock drought protection by tracking water and feed resources;
5⃣Integrated financing architecture through banks, the National Agricultural Enhancement Scheme, and private contractors;
6⃣Coordination through committees chaired by the private sector.
The early-response approach draws on lessons from previous droughts, Obert Jiri said.
