In this episode, we sit down with Ambassador Hanan Jarrar, Palestine’s representative in South Africa since 2020, for a historically grounded conversation on the deep ties between the two nations and South Africa’s landmark case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Ambassador Jarrar traces the relationship back to the shared struggle against oppression, recalling how the Palestine Liberation Organization stood with the ANC when it was branded a terrorist organization, and how Nelson Mandela’s famous words, “the freedom of the South African people is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinian people” continue to resonate.

She discusses South Africa’s decision to take Israel to the ICJ over genocide claims in Gaza, the August 2025 dossier on Israel’s non-compliance with provisional measures, and the growing number of countries that have joined the case.

"Israel has to be accountable for its deeds, for its continuous violation of human rights, of international humanitarian law, especially that we are living in the 21st century, and committing a genocide is something really that should take accountability at least," said Ambassador Jarrar.

“We are doomed by hope,” Ambassador says, quoting Mahmoud Darwish, insisting that no colonization or genocide lasts forever and that the path forward remains political resolution and an end to occupation.

Watch this episode for a discussion on solidarity and what genuine freedom for Palestine could look like in the years ahead.
