Austerity Measures in Malawi, SA Farmers Prepping for El Nino & Nelson Mandela’s Tree
17:17 22.09.2026 (Updated: 19:17 02.10.2026) This Nnete Fela Show with covers Malawi's sweeping austerity drive, South African farmers bracing for a Super El Niño, and an ambitious plan to plant 10 million trees in one day.
Malawi has suspended all government-funded workshops, seminars and conferences held outside official state facilities.
The directive forms part of a broader fiscal consolidation programme that includes cuts to ministerial fuel entitlements, a freeze on civil service recruitment and a cap on cabinet travel.
Political analyst George Chaima says the measures signal a government finally serious about enforcement. He argues that the government has to get creative about fixing its economy.
“The government has to think outside the box, and they continue looking at different ways of strengthening and rebuilding its national economy,” Chaima says.
The which question remains is whether the money saved by these austerity measures will reach ordinary Malawians, or vanish into debt repayment.
Later in the show we discuss South Africa's farms, where a Super El Niño threatens the nation's food supply. We discuss the measures being taken by SA farmers to safeguard against potential losses.
We also discuss Nelson Mandela’s tree which was planted as a symbolic gesture in 2007 to represent the growth of a democratic nation.
This comes as government prepares to plant 10 million trees on South Africa’s Heritage Day.
