South Africa Will Engage US on Visa Row, But Dignity Comes First, Says President Ramaphosa
Pretoria has noted the new visa restrictions announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which target unnamed individuals, Cyril Ramaphosa told reporters during a fundraising event in Johannesburg.
While Washington remains an important market, engagement would be conducted with dignity and sovereignty, he stressed, adding that South Africa expects the same respect it extends to others.
Keeping the dialogue open: The two countries share mutual trade interests and will continue engaging to find solutions, Ramaphosa added.
Pushback on the restrictions: South Africa rejected the US visa restrictions announced on September 16, saying the move mischaracterized domestic policies and undermined diplomatic efforts to resolve differences between the two governments.
