THROWBACK: Kwame Nkrumah’s Vision of African Self-Reliance Still Resonates Today
Today marks the 117th anniversary of the birth of Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president and a pioneering Pan-Africanist.
He led Ghana to independence in 1957 and co-founded the Organization of African Unity, championing continental unity, sovereignty, and the eradication of colonialism.
"There is a new African in the world. That new African is ready to fight his own battle and show that after all, the Black man is capable of managing his own affairs," Nkrumah emphasized in his independence speech in 1957.
Just as these words empowered Africans back then to manage their own affairs free from imperialist control, they remain deeply relevant today as the continent continues to resist neocolonial practices.
