Egypt Expands Mangrove Restoration on Red Sea Coast With 50,000 Trees: Minister
The planting in Hamata, Marsa Alam, is part of a project to develop a participatory model for mangrove restoration as a nature-based climate solution, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam said after inspecting the sites on Saturday.
Key details:
🟠Mangroves protect coastlines, support biodiversity, and strengthen local communities' resilience to environmental and climate challenges, according to the minister.
🟠Each tree can absorb between 350 and 400 kilograms of carbon dioxide over its lifetime, he noted.
🟠Sewilam stressed combining restoration with greater community participation and sustainable income-generating opportunities, including ecotourism and beekeeping, to make conservation environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable.
🟠He directed the Egyptian General Authority for Shore Protection to study planting mangroves at selected locations as an alternative to conventional coastal protection works.
