However, the Transaqua project proposes a solution to revive the severely shrunk Lake.
Pan-African Frequency discussed with Professor Olayiwola Akintola, Professor of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering at the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti, Nigeria, to confront one of the continent's most pressing questions: Can Lake Chad be saved? “The situation of the shrinking Lake Chad Basin is an ecological emergency as of today [....] This is more than missing water, but a collapse of the hydrological system. And a combination of factors are causing this. Number one is climate change and variability, which we all know the Sahel region has experienced recurring droughts since the 70s, and rainfall pattern has been unpredictable [....] another reason for the problem around lake Chad basin is diversion, irrigation [....]If we train our people on how to harvest rain during rainy season and store it so that it can be used during dry seasons, we put less pressure on this water from the lake that we are trying to protect. There are also wetland restoration and groundwater recharge. All these are adaptable and affordable, and they can empower the communities directly [...] The African can set the continental agenda, mediate disputes between countries and nations, and also promote water as a human rights approach,” the expert noted.
