Nigeria's President Orders Prosecution Over Deaths of 37 Suspected Illegal Miners: Statement

A comprehensive, transparent, and unhindered investigation must establish what happened to the miners—detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps—who died in custody, according to President Bola Tinubu's statement on X.

The investigation must establish:

🟠The circumstances of the arrests;

🟠The condition of the detainees when they were taken into custody;

🟠The conditions under which they were held;

🟠The number of persons detained at the facility;

🟠The medical attention provided to them;

🟠The events leading to their deaths.

Any official found responsible—through action, abuse, or negligence—must be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law, the president said.

"The life of every Nigerian matters. The fact that these individuals were suspected of illegal mining does not remove their right to life, dignity and humane treatment."

The video shows Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu commenting on the case at the Niger State Government House.
