Africa’s energy challenge is increasingly becoming a question not only of generating more electricity, but of how the continent can connect its natural resources, infrastructure, capital and markets to support industrialization.
In East Africa, Kenya and Tanzania could be at the center of such a model, with Tanzania’s natural gas resources potentially supplying energy for industrial development in Kenya. The proposed expansion of the gas-fired power component of the planned Dangote refinery project in Lamu from 500 megawatts to as much as 1,000 megawatts has raised the possibility of creating a wider regional energy and industrial corridor.Global South Pole engaged Dr. Dannis Masibo, Director and Chief Executive Officer of Africa Investment Hub in Nairobi, Kenya, to examine how the Lamu project could affect Kenya’s energy security, industrial competitiveness and regional economic integration. Masibo argued that the project could help shift Africa away from a model in which countries mainly export raw resources and instead develop regional value chains that create more economic activity within the continent. “You have a natural gas resource in Tanzania, market demands and infrastructure opportunities in Kenya, and industrial capital and entrepreneurial capacity from Nigeria [Dangote group]. How beautiful. This is the beginning of an African value chain,” Masibo said.
