A year ago, Ethiopia reopened its stock exchange after 50 years—and a major bank was recently listed. This raises profound questions about who benefits from financial markets, how African economies are shifting, and whether the continent can build a truly integrated financial system.
Ethiopia's stock exchange is not just a national story. It is a continental one. In this episode of the Pan-Africa Frequency, Dr. Arega Shumetie, senior researcher and economist at the Ethiopian Economics Association, speaks about what this milestone means for ordinary Ethiopians, and for African investors, at a time when African stocks prices are rising and investors are becoming more confident investing on the continent.
“The stock market, the one that is introduced as the newly investment arena may allow to have diversified investment opportunity. That may be one reason why some African investors try to reinvest their money within Africa [...] If the stock market operates and if the money generated with an African economy is re-invested in Africa rather than flying abroad, it may strongly reduce Africa’s dependency of foreign aid and borrowing, especially in the long run, when the investment operates in its full potential and in a diversified manner. This stock market may allow for many of African countries to gain their sovereignty regarding finance, regarding capital, and they may be free from being dependent for their budget. At the same time, they can operate freely without being twisted by the hand of the Westerners [...] But the preconditions, policies, strategies, as well as the political system should be stable, and should remain transparent to generate that huge potential of African stock market as well as re-investing the African money within Africa,” the expert stated.
