The 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India, did not simply end with a communiqué. It ended with a statement of intent. The New Delhi Declaration, adopted in September 2026, is not a routine diplomatic document. It is a blueprint for a world order that looks fundamentally different from the one Africa inherited after colonialism. Sputnik Africa Correspondent was present at the event and interacted with delegates, including Manish Chand, founder and CEO of the Centre for Global India Insight and Waniala Paul, Ugandan media expert who spoke about what the New Declaration means for Africa, and why Africa must prioritize market access, technology transfer, investment, security cooperation and innovation in the relations with BRICS group.
“This BRICS summit—and BRICS as such—is focused on forging an inclusive and representative world order, which means bringing in Africa [...] I think [The New Delhi Declaration] is a very reassuring, very compelling document which tries to bring in the African continent, integrate the African continent into the BRICS agenda and the larger multilateral agenda,” Chand stated.
We also look forward to having collaborations with member states of the BRICS to be able to boost our economy, to be able to help our technological upgrade and also to be able to probably invest in our country [...] We would really love to see there is innovation all sectors, especially on the African continent. This is the only way we're going to be able to solve a lot of problems in Africa. Every challenge that we have requires a lot of innovation. And member states in the BRICS at the moment have a higher standing in terms of offering some of this innovation and technical expertise,” Waniala highlighted.
