In this Nnete Fela Show, Dr Oscar van Heerden, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Diplomacy and Leadership, University of Johannesburg and a respected political analyst, joins to discuss the impact of the latest BRICS summit for the global south and Africa. We dive into the economic core of the summit the united front against unilateral tariffs and protectionism, and the quiet shift away from a unified BRICS currency toward more practical, localized trade settlements.Dr. van Heerden argues that BRICS formations are not positioning anyone as an enemy, as they seek to cooperate with everyone, including the United States of America and the European Union. However, if those countries choose to push back, then BRICS has the power to trade with each other, trade in their own currencies, de-dollarize, and set up their own payment system. WHAT DID AFRICA GET AT THE 18th BRICS SUMMIT?
18:25 14.09.2026 (Updated: 18:26 18.09.2026) The 18th BRICS Summit has concluded in New Delhi, marking two decades since the group's formation. This summit was a testament to the growth of BRICS, a bloc that has doubled in size and now accounts for nearly half the world's population and 40% of global GDP.
In this Nnete Fela Show, Dr Oscar van Heerden, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Diplomacy and Leadership, University of Johannesburg and a respected political analyst, joins to discuss the impact of the latest BRICS summit for the global south and Africa.
We dive into the economic core of the summit the united front against unilateral tariffs and protectionism, and the quiet shift away from a unified BRICS currency toward more practical, localized trade settlements.
Dr. van Heerden argues that BRICS formations are not positioning anyone as an enemy, as they seek to cooperate with everyone, including the United States of America and the European Union.
However, if those countries choose to push back, then BRICS has the power to trade with each other, trade in their own currencies, de-dollarize, and set up their own payment system. He thinks that this is an inflection point for the Western world.
Some progress has already been made in the de-dollarisation process, particularly by Russia and China, however Dr van Heerden warns that any progress will be incremental instead of revolutionary.
“Between Russia and China, they've already worked out an alternative to the swift payment systems, the international payment system […] it's going to be small steps, incremental steps. It's not going to happen overnight,” Dr van Heerden says.
The show also unpacks the biggest gains for Africa coming from the summit including the official summit declaration which supports Africa’s push for reform of the United Nations and its Security Council in particular.
So, what exactly did Africa get at the BRICS summit?
