Uncontrolled AI Could Enable Biological Weapons, SA's Ramaphosa Warns Urging Government Action
Governments must participate in developing safeguards against AI risks, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said at a press conference following the BRICS summit in New Delhi, warning that an uncontrolled AI ecosystem could lead to dangers including cybersecurity threats and biological weapons.
AI offers vast opportunities for economic development and improving lives, Ramaphosa noted, adding that the concerns of developers themselves about the risks of unchecked advancement must be taken into account.
South Africa has proposed that BRICS raise the AI issue at the international level.
The 18th BRICS summit concluded on Sunday with the adoption of the New Delhi Declaration, a 140-point document addressing global governance reform, AI cooperation, and independent payment systems.
