UN Security Council Reform Would 'Correct Historical Injustice': Uruguayan Expert

Expanding the UN Security Council to include Global South nations—a move supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin—would democratize the body, international relations expert Claudia Veiroj told Sputnik.

She noted that updating the council’s outdated, Western-biased post-war design aligns with the push from the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

ℹ At the time that system was created, many Global South nations were excluded or still under European colonial rule.

An expanded Security Council will give the UN greater legitimacy, empowering traditionally marginalized regions to participate in decision-making, rather than just receiving orders crafted by the Global North for its own benefit, Veiroj emphasized.
