Congo Basin Must Replace Colonial Export Agriculture With Food Sovereignty: Congolese Politician
The colonial-era export agriculture model continues to drive food dependence in the region, despite the Congo Basin possessing vast natural and agricultural resources, Honorary Senator of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Crispin Kabasele Tshimanga, told Sputnik Africa.
International financial institutions like the World Bank and the IMF do not operate for the well-being of local populations, the president of the Union of Socialist Democrats argued, noting they perpetuate these extractive economic patterns.
Achieving true food sovereignty requires educating local communities about the environmental risks of land burning and deforestation while shifting focus toward sustainable, domestic agricultural development, according to Tshimanga.
