Kenya Launches $16.2 Million Livestock Sector El Niño Preparedness Plan
The National Livestock Sector El Niño Preparedness and Anticipatory Action Plan has been officially launched, marking a significant expansion of Kenya's earlier contingency measures ahead of the October–December rains.
Key details:
🟠Target Areas: The plan focuses on 24 high-risk counties with heavy livestock concentrations.
🟠Objectives: It aims to protect livestock value chains, prevent disease outbreaks, minimize herd losses, and cut national disaster recovery costs.
🟠Government Commitment: Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe emphasized the need to learn from the devastating losses caused by the 2023 El Niño and 2024 long rains floods.
🟠Context: The initiative follows advisories from the Kenya Meteorological Department forecasting heightened risks of heavy rainfall, flash floods, and localized inundation.
This comes after the recent activation of Kenya's broader National Contingency Plan, which included drainage clearance, evacuation planning, and early warning systems.
