India Hosts 18th BRICS Summit Amidst Major Expansion
New Delhi is gearing up to host the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12-13, a landmark event bringing together leaders of the expanded 11-member bloc as it marks 20 years of cooperation.
The group now includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Indonesia, alongside 10 partner countries.
Key details:
🟠Collectively, BRICS members now represent 49% of the world's population, 40% of global GDP, and 26% of international trade, underscoring its growing influence.
🟠India, holding its fourth BRICS presidency, will guide the summit under the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability" with a "Humanity First" approach.
🟠Key agenda items are expected to include trade, national-currency settlements, AI, energy security, and a stronger voice for the Global South in global institutions.
🟠Adding strategic weight, Russia's Vladimir Putin held a meeting with PM Narendra Modi on Friday to review their strategic partnership, focusing on defence, energy, and trade.
🟠Chinese President Xi Jinping's expected participation will also add another layer of strategic engagement, marking his first potential visit to India since 2019.
The summit aims to translate the bloc's significant economic and demographic weight into deeper practical cooperation and greater global influence, according to Indian officials.
