'There is Huge Appetite in Private to Rejuvenate & Operate These Large Precincts': SA Minister on Reviving Vacant State Buildings South Africa is "currently embarking on the first of its kind mass disposal of government properties," with 801 buildings set to be sold off this financial year, said Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson, answering Sputnik Africa's question.Security costs for vacant state buildings alone amount to $28 million per year—money that could be "put back into development," Macpherson added."This is an opportunity for the private sector to invest in government-owned infrastructure, to operate it, to manage it, and then to return it over a period of time." The state will "remain the owners, the custodians," while the private sector "becomes the operator and developer," the minister explained.
