Across the continent, access to clean water remains a daily struggle for millions, a crisis often met with imported, unsustainable solutions. But two brilliant women are fighting back with homegrown solutions that prove the future of African water is not imported. It's being built right now, making every drop counts.

At the source, heavy metals—lead, arsenic, mercury—flow into rivers and boreholes from abandoned mines, unregulated factories, and decaying infrastructure. The water appears clean. Dr. Nomthandazo Sibiya-Dlomo, award-winning chemical engineer from South Africa, is transforming waste into a weapon against heavy metals and finding sustainable and low-cost solutions for wastewater treatment and environmental remediation. Growing up in a rural village where water was scarce and money even scarcer. She asked herself one question:At home, a different threat to water emerges. Water stored in jerry cans, buckets, and tanks for days becomes a breeding ground for biofilms—invisible, slimy layers of bacteria that cling to container walls. The water looks clean. It tastes normal. But it is slowly, silently, eroding health. Professor Muthumuni Managa, associate professor at the Institute for Nanotechnology and Water Sustainability in South Africa uses nanotechnology, activated by African sunlight, to stop biofilms from turning stored water into a slow poison.One woman tackles the source. The other tackles the storage. "Why can't I just use the knowledge that I have as an emerging engineer to solve, and try to contribute to society and also to my community [...] So, we use something that is readily available like your banana peels, orange peels, your sugar cane peggers [...] We want to find something that is more affordable, and at the end of the day, it will sustain us for a longer future. So, it's more on integrating, moving away from a costly solution or technologies, to a cheaper one, ” she said.

“One of the misconceptions that we have is that when we look at water, since it's clear, it means that it is clean. And that is not necessarily so [...] This is where my research comes in. We check the microbial profiling of that water, and we design smart materials that will be able to inactivate those microorganisms in the storage water systems. That is, your jerry jar, your bucket, your bucket system. So, these materials will be synthesized from either your plant extracts or your food extracts, because we want to also be green, to use green chemistry in order to answer these problems in our community,” the professor explained.
