‘Africa is Not Seeking Larger Place in World, Africa is Reclaiming its Rightful Place in World’ Says AU Head
AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf marked AU Day by calling on Africans and the African Diaspora to renew their commitment to Pan-Africanism, unity, and solidarity.
Celebrated on September 9, AU Day commemorates the 1999 Sirte Declaration, when African leaders took a historic step toward establishing the AU as a tool for accelerating continental integration and strengthening Africa’s global voice.
This year’s observance comes after the UN General Assembly endorsed an African-led initiative supporting the use of a world map that more accurately represents Africa’s true size. The initiative, led by Togo with AU support, was described as part of a broader effort to shape how Africa is represented globally.
Africa’s progress must also be measured by the quality of life of its people, highlighting this year's AU’s focus on sustainable water access and safe sanitation as an effort to connect continental goals with citizens’ daily realities, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf emphasized.
