'As Technology Evolves, Scams & Cybercrimes Evolve Alongside It': SA Investigator
"We're seeing a lot of sophisticated cybercrimes that are leveraging AI tools, face mapping, deep fakes, as well as sophisticated breach attacks, leveraging AI technology," forensics scientist Craig Pedersen told Sputnik Africa.
While the number of victims rises, a big concern is the unreported cases, "where people just accept the losses and move on," lacking "confidence in law enforcement," he explained.
"We need to breed a culture of people that have got two and three factor authentication on their devices [..] and are more mindful of how they communicate their personal data."
In digital banking, cybercriminals are using deep tech and face‑morphing technology with AI‑generated documents "to abuse the systems," Pedersen said.
Fortunately, South African banks "are very responsive to that," he added.
