This Nnete Fela Show discusses International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, marked in pollution-hit Atteridgeville, and South Africa's world-leading fetal alcohol spectrum disorder rates.
Atteridgeville in South Africa has recently been declared a high-risk air pollution site. This is why government officials, the Clean Air Fund, and community members gathered there to discuss how waste management, e-waste and the circular economy connect to the air problem.
South Africa's Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Bernice Swarts explains that there is money to be made by the community in waste management.

"We are saying waste is gold and trash is money […] if we manage waste, we'll find zero waste in the landfill sites of Tshwane, which means that there'll be money in people's pockets," Swarts says.

Early Prevention

We also discuss fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, where South Africa's rates dwarf the rest of the world.
Dr. Marlene de Vries, Project Coordinator at Stellenbosch's Department of Psychiatry, says prevalence in one Western Cape community sits between 20% and 31%, against a global figure of about 0.77%.
De Vries calls for prevention at every level, from schools and family planning clinics to shisanyamas that refuse to serve alcohol to pregnant women, and warns that without multi-sectoral collaboration, policies will sit on shelves.
Why does South Africa disproportionately suffer from fetal alcohol spectrum disorder?
How do communities start waste businesses without land?
