South Africa’s Constitutional Court to Decide Fate of Nelson Mandela Items: Media
The South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) and the culture ministry argue that the 29 Nelson Mandela memorabilia is a national heritage items and cannot be exported without authorization.
The items, including Mandela’s ID card and some of his iconic shirts, were listed for auction by US-based auction company in cooperation with Mandela's eldest daughter, Makaziwe, who had authorised the auction as a fundraiser for a memorial garden to be built next to her father's resting place in the village of Qunu.
The auction was first announced in 2021 but was suspended in 2022 after SAHRA challenged the sale. Although SA courts later allowed the auction to proceed, it was put on hold again as the government continued its legal efforts to stop it.
