Tariffs for SA Sugarcane Industry is 'Absolute Necessity': SA Canegrowers CEO
This measure will ensure stable supply as the industry will continue to survive and create jobs, while consumers will see little change in prices, which have remained flat for two years with only inflation adjustments ahead, Thomas Funke told Sputnik Africa.
"The import duty, the increase has already been implemented. So any sugar that was on the way or has been bought afterwards will pay the higher duty. So that is a good thing for South Africa."
Speaking about the sugarcane situation in various regions of Africa, Funke noted, that Southern Africa's sugar production already covers regional demand, with the next target being to export to North Africa, where "huge demand for sugar" exists.
"What disrupts African industries, and we're not unique in this, is sugar coming into the markets and then taking local production away, and that's been a problem all over Africa."
