SA Government Urges Communities to Cut Waste Burning
"We participate in the International Day of Clean Air Quality and Blue Skies, because it is part of the department's drive, that air quality in SA should reach the standard that is required," Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Bernice Swarts told Sputnik Africa.
This year, the department chose Atteridgeville, a high-priority area with severely contaminated air, to deliver the message that burning waste worsened pollution and that better landfill management is crucial for cleaner air, she said.
"There's a lot of opportunity within the circular economy and we are saying young people, and we are saying this is not opportunities for 18 to 35. Even old people who are 60, 70 can participate because it's the managing of waste," Swarts added.
The department hopes to see more applications for compliance and support for buy-back centres and SMMEs in the waste sector, with officials available to assist, she clarified.
