Africa Must Move From Being Merely Victim of Climate Change: UN Official
Africa has been expressing its concerns and calling for fairness for many years, but the continent must now become part of the solutions and a driver of the way forward, said Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa.
Preparing for COP31, one must ask not only what Africa expects from the international community, but also what Africa itself is proposing, he noted at the opening of the Climate Change and Development in Africa conference.
However, with Africa facing a $277 billion annual climate financing gap and current flows covering only 11%, more grants and highly concessional financing are urgently needed to avoid adding to debt pressures, Gatete emphasized.
