Burkinabe President Calls for Reduced Imports and Greater Self-Sufficiency

Ibrahim Traoré on September 4 stressed the need to boost local production and processing to reduce Burkina Faso’s dependence on imports, according to press reports.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony for the 4th class of trainees supported by the Agency for Support to Widows, Orphans and Victims of War, Traoré criticized the country’s reliance on imported food, saying Burkina Faso should not need to import basic products such as eggs and chickens.

The ceremony marked the graduation of 385 widows, orphans and war victims trained in agriculture, livestock farming, mechanics, office skills and processing, including soap, cosmetics and food production.

The government pledged to provide graduates with equipment, production support and guaranteed market access, including through public procurement.
