BRICS Alternative Economic Order, SA’s Victory Over HIV & SA’s Energy Diversification
15:26 04.09.2026 (Updated: 15:31 16.09.2026) In this Nnete Fela Show we discuss the role of BRICS as the possible architect of a new multilateral order. Plus, we also look at South Africa's HIV dialogue and a R8bn solar deal in Cape Town.
The global economic order, remains overwhelmingly shaped by institutions, currencies, and financial mechanisms that are dominated by the world's western economies.
For many countries in the Global South, there is a legitimate question as to whether alternative institutions can be built to give countries greater economic sovereignty.
This is the context in which BRICS has received particular attention as the architects of a new multilateral world order in which the financial structure guarantees interdependence and fairness.
Themba Godi, Former Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts in South Africa, joins the show to discuss what it would take for BRICS to move beyond declarations and build concrete alternatives.
“Without building alternatives you cannot change the entrenched systems Created by those hegemonic powers for the purpose of domination,” Godi says
“So, BRICS has to create alternative institutions one by one, from setting up the rules, setting up banks, to setting alternative transaction mechanisms,” Godi continues.
Later in the show we talk about South Africa's national dialog process as we look towards the National Dialogue on HIV and Health.
South Africa has been battling the scourge of HIV for more than two decades however it is still among the countries most affected by the disease. Furthermore, the majority of the South Africans are relying on an already strained public healthcare system.
Mabelani Mfundisi, the Executive Director of the Show Me Your Number HIV Prevention project and a member of the National Dialog Steering Committee joins the show to discuss role of communities in South Africa's national dialog process and some of the biggest challenges facing the HIV and Health sector.
Finally, we also talk about the R8 billion Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in August 2026 to buy solar power from independent producers over 20 years, cutting its reliance on Eskom.
