As the Russia-Africa Summit approaches, a new twinning agreement between Namibia's Kharas Region and Novosibirsk Oblast is opening doors for cooperation in education, technology, and investment. With vast mineral wealth and a young population, this partnership offers a path to building skills, creating jobs, and turning resources into sovereignty.
Namibia is rich in minerals, fish, agriculture, and green hydrogen potential, but unlocking that wealth requires the right skills and technology. Through this partnership, Kharas aims to send students to Russian universities, explore value addition in mining, attract investment, and even boost tourism—bringing the Russia-Africa relationship closer to the people and communities it is meant to serve.Global South Pole spoke with Honorable Gerrit Witbooi, Chairperson of the Kharas Regional Council, and Honorable Nestor Anguwo Sheimi, Oranjemund Councillor and Member of Parliament of Namibia, about the twinning agreement with Novosibirsk, the priority of education and skills development for Namibia's youth, and how regional cooperation can turn resources into jobs and economic growth.Honorable Sheimi emphasized that education is the top priority—with plans to create programs that prepare learners from school level for university in Russia, particularly to equip young Namibians with skills for the emerging oil and gas industry. Both representatives stressed the importance of moving beyond simply exporting minerals to adding value locally, and they highlighted renewable energy as a critical need, especially in mining communities struggling with electricity supply. "We do not just want to look for someone who comes to exploit and take resources—we really want to look into value addition," Honorable Nestor Anguwo Sheimi said. "We invite everyone listening to this interview, watching this interview, to come to Namibia, to come to the Karas region. The opportunities are so vast, and we are a peaceful country," Honorable Gerrit Witbooi added.
