South Africa Repatriates Two Children Trafficked to Malawi: Correspondent
Two girls, aged 9 and 13, have returned to South Africa after falling victim to human trafficking, a Sputnik Africa correspondent reported from OR Tambo International Airport where government officials welcomed the children.
Explaining the circumstances of the case, Social Development Minister Dina Pule stated during a briefing that a Malawian suspect had gained the mother's trust through a "romantic relationship" before trafficking the children to Malawi.
Following their safe return, the South African government outlined a coordinated response. Answering a Sputnik Africa question, Gugulethu Thimane, Acting Director-General of the Department of Social Development, noted that authorities will assess the affected family's needs and assist in providing shelter.
Furthermore, the children will receive comprehensive support to overcome trauma, recover from the separation, and successfully reintegrate into their community, Siza Magangoe, Deputy Director-General of Welfare Services, added.
