Zimbabwe Railway Expansion to Boost Southern African Mineral Exports to Asia: Official

National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) aims to triple annual freight to 6 million tonnes by 2030, leveraging economic stability and regional trade, NRZ public affairs manager Andrew Kunambura told local media.

Key factors supporting this target include:

Economic growth – Zimbabwe expects average annual growth of seven percent between 2026 and 2030, thanks to a rebounding manufacturing sector and strong global commodity prices.

Strong export demand – Bulk minerals like lithium, chrome, and coal are in high demand, especially in China and other Asian markets. A revenue-sharing agreement with Mozambique Ports and Railways is helping move that cargo efficiently.

Government support – Authorities are backing efforts to tackle long-standing operational issues, including aging equipment and a shortage of rolling stock.
