Guinea-Bissau Approves New Constitution, Expanding Presidential Powers: Media
The constitution was approved in a referendum, with 70% of voters in favor, ahead of a presidential election scheduled for December, according to media reports.
Key changes under the new constitution:
🟠Parliament will be reduced to 65 seats from 102;
🟠Electoral constituencies will be cut to 12 from 29;
🟠Presidential candidates must have lived continuously in Guinea-Bissau for the preceding five years;
🟠President gains power to appoint and dismiss government, create or abolish ministries, and dissolve parliament in a grave crisis.
