We speak to Dr Michael Kalaba, Senior Analyst at the Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy, about cold-chain logistics and agricultural trade in Africa.Africa has enormous agricultural potential, but producing food is only the beginning. Africa has enormous agricultural potential, but producing food is only the beginning. Without reliable refrigeration, storage, roads, railways and efficient border systems, significant quantities of food can be lost before reaching consumers.
Dr Kalaba explains how inadequate infrastructure contributes to post-harvest losses, what South Africa can learn from countries such as Morocco and Egypt, and why expanding intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area will require more than simply reducing tariffs.
"Adjusting for structural issues […] would improve trade even better than the agreement would, even better than the tariff reduction," Dr Kalaba said.
