SA’s GBVF Council, Women in the Military, South Sudan and Lavrov’s Thoughts on Nato in the Arctic
15:23 31.08.2026 (Updated: 16:00 16.09.2026) This this Nnete Fela Show discusses South Africa’s renewed fight against GBVF, the SANDF's Women-Only Parade, South Sudan’s path to elections with South Africa's support, and Arctic geopolitics affecting BRICS and global trade.
We begin by examining South Africa’s renewed response to gender-based violence and femicide as the newly established National Council on GBVF begins its work.
The council will focus on prevention and coordination in the fight for women’s protection.
Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Youth, Women and Persons with Disabilities Steve Letsike comments that the work of the council should be measured by its effect on the daily lives of women.
“It's really about changing the lived reality of women on the ground. Can women in South Africa live less with fear? Can they walk freely and safely in their communities,” Letsike says.
Beyond their safety, we also look at women’s growing role in the South African National Defence Force as the SANDF marks the end of Women’s Month with its annual Women-Only Parade.
From there, we turn to South Sudan ahead of its expected December 2026 elections and explore its longstanding relationship with South Africa.
Professor Dirk Kotze from the University of South Africa explains this long relationship between SA and South Sudan
“South Africans and South Sudanese are very well acquainted with each other,” Prof Kotze says.
Finally, we look north to the Arctic, where Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has criticized NATO’s growing military presence and called for cooperation.
We discuss what the changing geopolitics of the Arctic could mean for global trade, BRICS and Africa’s pursuit of greater strategic autonomy in an emerging multipolar world.
