Harms of Transatlantic Slave Trade Persist, Require Reparations Today: UN

"Anti-Black racism, created to sustain chattel slavery, has endured long after abolition," the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination said in a new general recommendation.

Key recommendations from the committee:

🟠Reparatory measures must combine monetary and non‑monetary measures, encompassing restitution, compensation, rehabilitation, satisfaction and guarantees of non-repetition;

🟠States must repeal or revise domestic laws and policies that perpetuate racism, racial hierarchies, or hinder reparatory justice;

🟠States must ensure the full participation of people of African descent and affected communities in designing and implementing reparatory measures;

🟠Private actors—including religious organizations, universities, businesses, banks, and insurers that profited from the slave trade—must contribute to reparatory justice;

🟠States should ensure accurate teaching of historical injustices and combat misinformation and ideologies of racial superiority.
