Libya's Rival Parties Sign Agreement to Hold Elections Within Two Years: UN
The agreement was signed on Sunday at headquarters of the UN Support Mission in Tripoli, following talks in a smaller format known as the "4+4," involving two representatives from each of Libya's four main institutions.
Key points from the agreement:
🟠Elections to be held within 24 months under a single executive authority;
🟠Amendments to the electoral framework to be adopted;
🟠The House of Representatives and High Council of State must endorse the agreement within one month.
🟠If they fail to do so, the parties will seek to adopt it as a constitutional document through national mechanisms and secure UN Security Council backing.
"Today's signing represents an important step toward overcoming the political and institutional impasse that has hindered the electoral process in Libya," Hanna Tetteh, special representative of the Secretary General, said during the signing ceremony.
