The DRC is preparing to launch its first minerals exchange. Before the first share is traded, a rare window of opportunity is open—one that could put ownership, transparency, and real power into African hands. This episode explores how the design of this exchange could reshape who benefits from Congo's cobalt, copper, and lithium.
The Democratic Republic of Congo holds the minerals the world cannot do without. Cobalt for electric vehicles. Lithium for batteries. Copper for the green transition. These resources have made the DRC indispensable to the global economy. Now, the government has announced plans to launch the country's first stock exchange—an institution that could channel mineral wealth into public, regulated markets.
On this episode of Pan-African Frequency, we move beyond the headlines and ask the urgent question: What must be put in place before the first trade? Christian-Géraud Neema Byamungu, a natural resource governance expert and consultant specializing in China’s engagement in Africa’s transition minerals sector, spoke about the design conditions and governance preconditions that would benefit Congolese mining companies first. He noted that before the first listing, the real work is governance, ensuring transparency, and ownership.
If we make the stock exchange a space where the local Congolese mining sector can now raise capital to be able to finance its own mining project, to be more able to have their own mining company being developed on the ground without foreign capital, that's going to strengthen the DRC [...] We have to think of a structure where, at the end, the people are really benefiting [...] We need to have a stock exchange that's really transparent, that's really clear. That in terms of regulators, it will allow those financial flows to be financing local businesses, to finance those companies that want to be able to develop their own mining project on the ground [...] at the end, the Congolese entrepreneurs, the businessmen, will be able to win because they'll be able now to raise capital for their own mining endeavors and businesses,” he stated.
