Africa Must Prioritize Self-Reliance & Local Manufacturing for Health Sovereignty, Expert Says
African nations must shift toward domestic financing, private sector involvement, and blended financing to fund their healthcare systems amid declining global health aid, according to Ntuli A. Kapologwe, Director General of the East, Central, and Southern Africa Health Community.
Speaking to Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the 76th WHO Regional Committee for Africa in Addis Ababa, Dr. Kapologwe emphasized the importance of data sovereignty, localized AI, and retaining healthcare talent for the continent's health security.
Key Highlights:
🟠 Data Sovereignty: "Data that is needed for any other party should be something that Africa can negotiate and should have power on it," Dr. Kapologwe stated, noting that most African countries have already passed laws on data security and protection.
🟠 AI & Digital Health: Through the AU and Africa CDC, the continent now has guidelines for artificial intelligence to ensure AI tools are trained on localized African data rather than imported algorithms carrying external biases.
🟠 Retaining Talent: Dr. Kapologwe called for strategic investment in healthcare workers, including incentive packages and identifying priority specialties to prevent brain drain.
🟠 Climate Resilience: He stressed that countries must have adaptation plans to address climate-sensitive diseases like malaria, dengue, and cholera, which are resurging across the continent.
