Nigeria's Dangote Refinery Drives Seven-Fold Surge in Petroleum Product Exports: EIA
Nigeria’s seaborne petroleum product shipments averaged 561,000 barrels per day (bpd) in the second quarter of 2026—up seven-fold from the annual average of 79,000 bpd recorded in 2023, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).
Dangote Refinery Effect
The increase has been driven largely by the Dangote refinery, which began operations in January 2024. Its growing output has delivered two major wins for Nigeria:
Reduced reliance on imported refined products
Boosted domestic supply and export capacity
Global Factors Also Play a Role
The total petroleum product shipments grew further as disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz increased demand for alternative refined fuel supplies, the EIA also reported.
A Closer Look at the Numbers
Domestic shipments within Nigeria also rose to 211,000 bpd in Q2 2026, up from 81,000 bpd in 2025 and 33,000 bpd in 2023.
Seaborne imports fell from nearly 400,000 bpd in 2023 to less than 130,000 bpd in Q2 2026,
The numbers highlight Nigeria’s growing self-sufficiency in refined petroleum products.
