South Africa’s Housing Crisis and Africa’s BRICS Future
15:37 24.08.2026 (Updated: 15:39 14.09.2026) This Nnete Fela Show examines the proposed PIE Amendment Bill and what it could mean for vulnerable communities facing eviction in SA. Later we discuss BRICS and the question of whether the expanding bloc can help Africa achieve greater economic sovereignty.
In this episode we interview Abahlali baseMjondolo organiser Mqapheli Bonono, who explains why activists oppose the proposed changes to South Africa’s Prevention of Illegal Evictions Act amendments. Bonono argues that housing and land inequality must be addressed rather than criminalised.
He makes a heartfelt plea for sympathy with impoverished South Africans who suffer immensely when they lose their homes.
“We have seen kids, you now, leaving their homes, going to school. When they come back to school, they come, there's no home. Their parents and their mothers are crying and they're afraid,” Bonono says.
According to civil society organization Abahlali baseMjondolo (the shack dwellers) this amendment would exacerbate this problem creating more situations where poor people are left with nowhere to go.
This is why they are calling for the rejection of the PIE amendment bill.
“We're rejecting this because […] It's taking us back to the very same act of 1951 that was preventing people to have the right to live in the cities. Criminalizing the whole occupation of land without resolving the land issue,” Bonono continues.
Later in the show we explore Africa’s place in BRICS with geopolitical analyst Khonya Mathonsi, who discusses natural resources, energy security, local-currency trade and the importance of African leadership in shaping the bloc’s future.
How should Africa position itself within BRICS?
Does the PIE act worsen South Africa’s housing crisis?
