The previous record was held by Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo, who completed the 21.1 km distance in 57:20 in Lisbon in March.

He also holds the 10 km world record (26:31) and has won two indoor world championship gold medals in the 3,000 meters (2016, 2018).
