Ethiopia’s Maternal & Child Mortality Drops by 76% in 20 Years: Health Minister
Maternal and child mortality rates have significantly declined, with deaths per 100,000 live births dropping from 871 to 141, Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba said at a press conference on the preparations for the 76th WHO Regional Committee for Africa meeting, as reported by a Sputnik Africa correspondent.
Health ministers from 47 African nations will gather in Addis Ababa on August 25-28 to forge a unified stance on continental health challenges, she noted.
Ethiopia will advance five priority health agendas at the conference:
Building sustainable health financing;
Strengthening primary health care;
Advancing digital health;
Empowering health professionals;
Developing health infrastructure.
For his part, WHO Regional Director for Africa Mohamed Janabi noted that the conference will determine the health future of 1.5 billion Africans and called for self-reliant steps to strengthen the continent's disease prevention capacity.
