Ethiopia Needs No Permission to Develop Nile Resources, Rejects Joint GERD Management, Says Minister

The country has a sovereign right to develop its resources based on national interests, Water and Energy Minister Habtamu Itefa told local media, firmly rejecting calls for joint management of the GERD.

"How come the dam that has been built by Ethiopians, that has been our national pride project, someone who has been opposing the movement comes and says, 'We will manage together?' It is impossible, totally impossible, unthinkable," he said.

Other key statements by the minister:

🟠Ethiopia has refrained from developing more than 230,000 hectares of potentially irrigable land downstream of the GERD, demonstrating consideration for downstream countries.

🟠Ethiopia currently supplies electricity to Djibouti, Kenya, and Sudan, with demand growing in Somalia and South Sudan. Kenya is seeking more power than Ethiopia can currently provide.
