Specialists have been monitoring the cubs for some time. They initially lived with their biological mother in Russia before being spotted in China. They later returned to Russia accompanied by another female leopard, nicknamed “Tolstushka” (“Fatty”).
Why their biological mother left them remains unknown, though she is alive and continues to be spotted. Specialists at Land of the Leopard National Park called the other female’s adoption of the cubs an unprecedented example of altruistic behavior.
