Ugandan UN Chief Candidate Prioritizes Urgent Reform & Conflict Resolution
Urgent reforms are essential to save the organization from crisis and restore its moral authority to bridge global divisions, Ugandan diplomat and a candidate for the next UN Secretary-General, Olara Otunnu, said.
Resolving major global conflicts—including those in Ukraine, Gaza, Africa’s Great Lakes, and Iran—must be the top priority for the next UN chief, he noted.
“Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy,” the diplomat emphasized, quoting the Prayer of St. Francis.
ℹOlara Otunnu, 75-year-old Ugandan diplomat, formerly served as UN undersecretary‑general. He is one of the candidates to succeed incumbent UN Chief António Guterres.
