Namibia & SA Honor Heroes as Colonial-Era Remains Return Home: Media

Namibia and South Africa have held a joint repatriation ceremony for Namibian human remains, casts, and the remains of freedom fighters Festus Nehale and Simon Petrus Niilenge, who died in custody on Robben Island in 1974 after being imprisoned by the South African colonial regime.

More than five decades later, the two freedom fighters have finally returned home and will be reburied at Heroes' Acre outside Windhoek.

Namibia's Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Sanet Steenkamp, described the ceremony as a moment of "dignity restored and history reclaimed," while South African Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie reflected on the sacrifices made during the liberation struggle.

Both governments reaffirmed their commitment to further provenance research and the return of additional cultural heritage items held abroad.
