In 2006, a bulk carrier Probo Koala chartered by a Dutch and Swiss company discharged more than 580 tonnes of hazardous substances at the port of Abidjan.

The toll was heavy: 17 dead and tens of thousands of people poisoned.

The consequences of this tragedy remain very real even today.
