Somali Airlines Set to Resume Flights in Mid-September After 35-Year Hiatus
The Somali Civil Aviation Authority confirmed the national carrier's return to service, marking a milestone for the war‑torn country, which has lacked a functioning airline since operations were halted during the civil war in 1991.
Key Details:
Fleet: The airline will initially operate two Airbus A320 aircraft, acquired under a July 2025 agreement. Additional aircraft are expected as the network expands.
Network: Plans include both domestic and international routes, with historical destinations in East Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
Preparations: Relaunch preparations are in their final stages, but the airline must still secure regulatory approvals and ensure staffing, maintenance, and operational systems are in place.
The relaunch is part of Somalia's broader efforts to rebuild its aviation sector, improve connectivity, and reduce dependence on foreign carriers. Multiple previous revival attempts have been postponed.
