DRC Ebola Outbreak Becomes Second Deadliest in History With 47.3% Fatality Rate: Media

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has recorded 5,021 Ebola cases and 2,378 deaths in the current outbreak, the country's health ministry reported.

The outbreak, which began on May 15 in the DRC and Uganda, has become the second-deadliest Ebola outbreak in Africa's history.

Six provinces in the DRC are now affected, with Ituri Province at the epicenter. Uganda officially declared the situation over on July 28.

The rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus is responsible for the outbreak, and a vaccine against it is still undergoing clinical trials. The WHO has designated the DRC outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
