On this episode of the Nnete Fela Show, we examine the opening of the Gqeberha Military Base Hospital in the Eastern Cape and what it means for SANDF personnel, military veterans, pensioners, and their families.
The facility is designed to bring specialized healthcare closer to thousands of beneficiaries while providing services ranging from emergency care and surgery to rehabilitation, dental care, and diagnostics.
But opening a hospital is only the beginning. We explore the importance of staffing, sustainable funding, maintenance, and mental healthcare.
Minister of Defense Angie Motshekga says that buildings don’t heal people, the hospital must be staffed by competent professionals to ensure its success.

“Buildings do not heal people, but it's our professionals who do that. I wish to challenge you to make this facility a benchmark of excellence,” the minister says.

We ask whether this new infrastructure can deliver the quality of care that military communities deserve.
We also look at the wider role of military healthcare in South Africa’s defense readiness and regional cooperation, including the potential for the SANDF’s medical capabilities to support peacekeeping and operations across the SADC region.
